Who happened at xAPI Camp Amazon?
MARK OEHLERT (Manager, Learning Technology, Networked Learning, Amazon)
Mark Oehlert is a trained historian and anthropologist and brings that unique insight to any challenge. Mark is currently Manager on the Networked Learning team at Amazon, working to bring learning at scale to the global enterprise. Mark has worked at the strategic level in L&D for 15 years in SaaS, social business, consulting and as a federal civilian at the Department of Defense.
AARON E. SILVERS (CO-ORGANIZER)
Aaron E. Silvers (@aaronesilvers) is a designer, technologist and strategist. He’s helped learning technologies like SCORM and the Experience API (xAPI) find massive adoption. Through his consultancy, MakingBetter, Aaron helps companies make full use of xAPI. He is the co-founder and co-organizer of the seminal community, “Up to All of Us.” Aaron leads the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee charged with standardizing xAPI, creating a new industry consortium to steer xAPI’s growth and evolution, its associated specifications and best practices. In 2014, Aaron helped launch the Connections Forum with Megan Bowe to bridge the gaps for practitioners between learning & education, design, data and technology.
SEAN PUTMAN (VP, Learning and Development, Altair Engineering)
Sean Putman, the Vice President of Learning Development for Altair Engineering and the Owner of Intellectus Learning, has been an instructor, instructional designer, and developer for over 15 years. He has spent his career designing and developing training programs, both instructor-led and online, for many different industries. Sean has also spent the last few years focusing on the use and deployment of the Experience API and its affect on learning interventions. Sean has spoken at many industry conferences on xAPI and related topics.
BEN ERLANDSON (CTO, McKinsey Social Initiative)
With over ten years of experience designing and researching digital learning environments, Dr. Erlandson is passionate about building efficient and effective technological systems for learning and authentic performance assessment. As CTO of McKinsey Social Initiative, his primary responsibilities are to oversee the augmentation of MSI programs with technological infrastructure, especially from the perspective of enhanced learning and cost savings; to establish and maintain the UX and technological visions for MSI global and each of our programs; and engage and oversee vendors and tech partners at global and local levels.
MYRA TRAVIN (Educational Futurist, METAImpressions)
In the equation of technology and learner, Myra Travin believes the key element is how human beings develop a relationship with the tool they are using and how they co-create a future state of resourcefulness together. She believes that the music is not in the piano, but in the interaction between the user and technology. In other words: Learners First. In her Learning Ecology and User Access Ecology designs, she brings all elements of personalization, choice, and access into self-supporting environments.She is an Innovative LX Designer and Educational Futurist with significant experience in Implementation of Organizational Development, Mentorship, UX/UI Design, Predictive Analytics Design, mLearning Design and Delivery, Change Management, Stakeholder Communications Strategies, and CRM projects. Myra has worked in disciplines ranging from higher education with universities to such Fortune 500 companies as Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, BP, Walgreens, PwC, and SPSS, Inc., and public sector agencies such as Los Alamos National Labs, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Ministry of Forests in Canada. She has a deep interest in and a commitment to relationship and interaction within learning environments and assisting individuals in understanding their nature, behavior, and motivations to significantly increase their performance.
KIRSTY KITTO (Senior Research Fellow, Queensland University of Technology)
Kirsty is a the Lead Investigator for a project sponsored by the Australian Government’s office for Learning and Teaching Enabling connected Learning via open source analytics in the wild, ID14-3821. This project is developing a Connected Learning Analytics toolkit, which uses xAPI to store data about student participation in learning activities designed using standard social media tools. More generally, Kirsty is a Senior Research Fellow in the Information Systems School at Queensland University of Technology and models the ways in which humans interact with complex information environments, paying special attention to the interdependencies between language, attitudes, memory and learning. She is currently seconded to the Learning Futures Team, which is devoted to exploring and shaping the future of learning and teaching, at QUT and beyond.
ANEESHA BAKHARIA (Lead Data Analyst, Queensland University of Technology)
Aneesha Bakharia completed her PhD on Interactive Topic Modelling at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Queensland University of Technology. She has qualifications in Microelectronic engineering, digital design and music production. She is the developer of SNAPP, a tool that integrates provides social network analysis for discussion forums in Learning Management Systems. Aneesha is currently working on the Connected Learning Analytics Toolkit as lead data analyst.
BILL MCDONALD (CMI5 Working Group)
Bill McDonald is a former officer of the AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee). For the past 25 years Bill has been an learning technology professional in the (100 seat+) commercial aviation pilot training market. For 22 of those years, he has also been very active in eLearning technology specifications that support the broader training industry. He has been a major contributor to important interoperability specifications such as AICC/HACP and the original SCORM. Currently, he leads the CMI5 specification effort.
RUSSELL DUHON (CTO, Saltbox)
Russell Duhon is a machine learning, data mining and information visualization expert responsible for architecting and developing the Saltbox data platform (Wax LRS). He is a major contributor to and world’s top technical expert on the Experience API learning technology standard. He previously helped create widely used science cyber-infrastructure tools as part of a research group at Indiana University.
DUNCAN WELDER (Director of Client Services, RISC)
Mr. Welder holds a Master’s of Education from Texas A&M University in Educational Technology and has over 19 years implementation of Learning Management Systems, domestically and abroad, to manage regulatory-compliance in high-consequence . Duncan has provided presentations to professional organizations including the Gulf Coast Process Technology Alliance, the e-Learning Guild and the Association for Talent Development. Mr. Welder’s career is founded in instructional design and e-learning. He is a certified as a Development Dimensions International facilitator, a Kirkpatrick Evaluator and facilitator of the Ohio State University curriculum development program. In addition to working in industry, Mr. Welder has held adjunct faculty positions at Bowling Green State University and the College of the Mainland.

MICHAEL HRUSKA (CEO, Problem Solutions)
Michael Hruska is a technologist with experiences spanning across standards, emerging technologies, learning, and science. He is a former researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Mike provides technology, business model and innovation solutions to Fortune 500, government and startups. His team has been stewarding the efforts for the last 7+ years at the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative on the Experience API (xAPI). He researches, strategizes, designs, and makes xAPI solutions and products. Michael’s experience spans the continuum between advanced research on adaptive learning ecosystems and solution/product design.
NICK WASHBURN (Director, Riptide Software – Learning Division)
Nick Washburn has a 20+ year career working with software companies and hi-tech entrepreneurs in distance learning, and web based software. During 2009-2012 he led the design and development of an award winning multilingual training product line at a leading training provider for Fortune 50/500 companies. In 2006, Nick led the design and development of the award winning Future Soldier Training System (FSTS) used by the U.S. Army.
MEGAN BOWE (CO-ORGANIZER)
Megan Bowe (@meganbowe) knows product. She loves digging into the details of strategy, planning, development, and rollout. She’s worked with learning technology companies, major publishers, and large organizations to create plans that uniquely meet user needs and use data-driven feedback loops to iterate smarter and faster. Megan works on projects bringing learning, portability of data, and analytics together. Megan has worked with Knewton, designing API integration strategies. With Rustici Software, she helped to roll out the Experience API (xAPI). Through MakingBetter, Megan helps people understand and use xAPI. She co-created “Up to All of Us,” a community focusing on advancing learning, design and technology. In 2014, Megan helped launch the Connections Forum with Aaron Silvers to bridge the gaps for practitioners between learning & education, design, data and technology.
